LIMITED EDITION of 200 copies, printed by William M. Cheney at the Press in the Gatehouse. This is a brief account of the establishment of missions in Alta California. Emily Whytock is the granddaughter of Ernest Dawson, and Glen Dawson's niece (Letters to Emily, 1996).
This book has no reference to Dawson's Book Shop - another example where I disagree with Bradbury. The Press in the Gatehouse was the brain child of Glen Dawson, Jake, Zeitlin, and Lawrence Clark Powell. The arrangement was that Cheney would set up his print shop at the Clark Library in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles. Cheney was to pay no rent; Cheney was to do job printing for the Clark Library, but was free to pursue his own projects as well. Cheney did print material for Dawson's Book Shop at the Press at the Gatehouse, but the Press in the Gatehouse was NOT an extension of Dawson's Book Shop. The Press in the Gatehouse printed material for other publishers and did its own editions as well. Bradbury lists Press in the Gatehouse publications under William M. Cheney and Dawson's Book Shop, improperly in my opinion. Bradbury should have a separate entry for Press in the Gatehouse. The Press in the Gatehouse operated from 1962-1974.
