Hoffman and executed at the Silverlake Bindery. Small 8vo. 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches. [iv], (88) pp. Half-title, frontispiece portrait of Peale, title page printed with rules and in black and brown inks, color View of the Rocky Mountains tipped-in, headings in brown ink, 10 illustrations, bibliography; text clean, unmarked. Black cloth spine, illustrated paper over boards, spine titled in gilt, maps in end-papers; binding square and tight, light soiling with toning to covers, two mars or scratches on front cover. ES820-002. Very Good. "Diary of a journey by the inland route from Oregon to Yerba Buena, coming in by Sutter's fort and circling the Bay southward, by way of San Jose and Santa Clara. There is considerable detail concerning the land route, the flora and fauna encountered, the Indians, and the general conditions of travel." Rudkin, p. 7. Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885) was an American ornithologist, entomologist, photographer, naturalist, and explorer. He was a noted scientific illustrator whose paintings and drawings of wildlife were known for their beauty and accuracy. He was a member of the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842, during which this Diary was recorded. Clifford M. Drury had a noteworthy career as a pastor, seminary professor, historian, and Navy Chaplain. During a 25-year career teaching church history at San Francisco Theological Seminary, Drury published 25 books and wrote many journal articles on the missionary history of the Pacific Northwest. Carl S. Dentzel (1913-1980) had a varied career as a journalist, the founder of the park system of Beverly Hills, and a preservationist of landmarks of Los Angeles.
