Much of its interest lies in its distinctly Russian point of view." Rudkin, p. 8. Alexander Markoff was aboard the Naslednik Alexander when it dropped anchor at San Francisco bay in 1845. Markoff's account of his visit was first published in the periodical Russkaia Slovensnost, Saint Petersburg, 1849, and later in The Russians in the Eastern Ocean (2nd ed., St. Petersburg, 1856). Markoff's detailed descriptions of the Californians [during the last year of Mexican occupation] and their way of life are colorful and reasonably accurate." Woodward.
