The subject is a full-length portrait of Dorian Gray who expressed the desire to sell his soul, to ensure that the picture, rather than Dorian himself, would age and fade. The wish is granted, and Dorian Gray pursues a libertine life of varied amoral experiences while staying young and beautiful, whilst the portrait ages and records every sin. Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet and playwright who experimented with various literary forms throughout the 1880s. He was one of the most popular playwrights in London in the 1890s. He is best remembered for his epigrams and plays, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, and the circumstances of his criminal conviction for gross indecency for consensual homosexual acts, imprisonment, and early death at age 46.
