A brief forward in Volume 1 outlines the sources used in this book which consist of 2 auto-biographical writings Lincoln wrote in 1859 and 1860, and other Lincoln sources gathered by the editor, Ralph Newman. These works are Lincoln's own words, strung together by Newman whose connecting text is printed in a smaller type size so the reader knows which are Lincoln's and what are Newman's contributions. Ralph Newman was an American author and well-known Abraham Lincoln scholar. He owned the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop in Chicago, Illinois, and hosted a monthly gathering known as the Civil War Round Table. He was an expert in Civil War-related manuscripts, played minor league second base for Tucson and Wichita, and appraised the papers of six United States presidents: Hoover, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon.
