Very Good. A far-ranging book of quotations regarding food, from Shakespeare to whoever struck Robert Grabhorn's fancy, all dressed up beautifully in the best work of which the Arion Press was capable in their second publication. From M. F. K. Fisher's Preface: "Robert Grabhorn began his clipping early and during his lifetime collected at least eight volumes of quotations on printing alone. He was about thirty, though, and well along in his rich life, before he began to pluck gastronomical crumbs from off and from under the tables of the great, sub-great, superficial wits and thinkers of History, and he did not stop this delicious habit until a few days before he died. It probably began when his elder brother and printing partner Edwin sent him to Europe for a year, in 1923-1924. Of course he studied bookbinding and observed presses and such-like there, but he also worked diligently at the arts of eating and drinking. Then, back in America, he married the 'brilliant and outrageous' Jane, with whom he zealously continued his full curriculum. She undoubtedly whetted his fever for collecting quotations that could stimulate or amuse or even irritate him (which is what most commonplace books are for, of course)."
