[x], (10) pp. Half-title, the second leaf folds to hold 2 original printed leaves and the original illustrated plate, title printed in red and black, printer's device on title page, bibliography; text clean, unmarked. Plain gray wrappers, printed paper spine label, marbled slipcase; binding square and tight, slip case lightly rubbed. From Muir Dawson's private collection without distinguishing marks. SFK519-003. Fine. This leaf book contains a total of 3 original leaves; 2 printed leaves and 1 leaf with an engraved plate. The book features a leaf from the memorial edition of the Fables Choisies, illustrated by Jean-Baptiste Oudry and printed in Paris by Charles-Antoine Jombert between 1755-1759. The leaf depicts the text of Fable CCXIV, "Les Compagnons d'Ulysses," alongside the corresponding illustrated plate. The original leaves and illustration are followed by an original monograph by Frances Brewer on Jean De La Fontaine (1621-1695) and his elegant animal fables renowned for providing insight into 17th-century French society. In this particular fable, the first of Book XII, the poet "works a splendid turn on Circe's magic. Ulysses' men, each transformed into a different sort of beast, all elect to remain animals rather than being returned to human form." This elegant leaf book is printed by one of North America's finest small private presses during their heyday, and beautifully presents a succinct monograph from Frances J. Brewer, who published several editions of De La Fontaine's works during her lifetime. REFERENCE: The Complete Fables of Jean De La Fontaine, trans. Norman D. Shapiro, p. xxxvii; Harmsen and Tabor, The Plantin Press, No. 215; De Hamel and Silver, Disbound and Dispersed, No. 130.
