He traveled widely and served as a judge in the American Southwest. But he is perhaps best known for the letters he wrote to the Hartford Evening Press from 1863 to 1866. These letters are printed here, edited by John Nicolson and David K. Strate, who provide a brief biography. These letters document Allyn's travels along the Santa Fe Trail in New Mexico, Arizona, California and Utah. REFERENCE: Harlan, The Two Hundredth Book, No. 187.
