Antonio Pigafetta was an Italian scholar and explorer from the Republic of Venice. Pigafetta traveled with the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and his crew by order of King Charles I of Spain on their voyage around the world. During the expedition, Pigafetta served as Magellan's assistant and kept an accurate journal which later assisted Pigafetta in translating the Cebuano language, the first recorded document concerning this Austronesian language spoken in the Philippines. There are several versions of Pigafetta's account, but Robinson's translation of the Ambrosian manuscript is still considered the classic edition. REFERENCE: Clark & Brunet, Arthur H. Clark Company, No. 215.
