Samarkand and Other Markets I Have Known is a monumental poem that draws on history, myth, and contemporary culture to explore the poignancy of human exchange as transacted on a daily basis in the world's great marketplaces. Both lyrical and ironic, the poem lays bare difficult religious, political, and social issues while celebrating the potential of the human spirit. "Wole Soyinka is a Nigerian playwright, poet and essayist. Soyinka was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Literature, the first African honored in that category." Wikipedia. Robert Kleinschmidt's woodcut illustrations (Kleinschmidt is professor emeritus of printmaking at the University of Utah) intensify the richness of the poetry, adding to the reader's experience.
