LIMITED EDITION of 425 copies, designed by Jack Werner Stauffacher, composed by Mackenzie & Harris, Inc. in Van Dijck types, the display face is Hunt Roman by Hermann Zapf. John C. Fremont was an American explorer, soldier, and politician. He was a key figure in America's myth of Manifest Destiny; he led five expeditions to the American West, and his maps and reports influenced many Americans to travel west. The text here is Fremont's memoir and map of his fourth expedition, which he published in the hopes of restoring his reputation after being publicly humiliated and court-martialed. Accomplished American historians Allan Nevins and Dale Morgan each provide an introduction to this edition; several sections of the original 1848 edition are presented in facsimile with permission from the Huntington Library and San Francisco Public Library Special Collections.
