"This essay is reprinted from Ticknor, Reed, and Fields' edition of De Quincey's Letters to a Young Man and Other Papers, published at Boston in 1854. It appeared first in Hogg's Weekly Instructor, an English periodical, in 1852. The 1853 postscript was added to a later edition, from which the Ticknor, Reed text was taken.
