FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of Bernal Diaz del Castillo's first-hand account of the Aztec conquest of Hernan Cortes. 4to. 10 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches. viii, 514 pp. Frontispiece map of Mexico City; edges of the map chipped and torn affecting only the margins, early ink notes on 2 pages of the Table of Contents, LACKS the errata. Early full tree calf, re-backed with brown leather, black leather spine label, label titled and ruled in silver; binding square and tight, leather flaking, corners showing, LACKS fly-leaf. Good. Diaz's account of the Mexican conquest along with that of Cortes are first-person accounts recording important aspects of Mesoamerican culture. In his later years, Diaz became an encomendero and governor in Guatemala where he wrote his memoirs called Historia verdadera de la conquest de la Nueva Espana (The True History of the Conquest of New Spain). The translator, Maurice Keating (circa 1761-1835) was an Irish landowner, soldier and politician.
