LATER ENGLISH-LANGUAGE EDITIONS. Two Volumes in One. 12mo. 5 3/4 x 3 1/4 inches. (xx), 208; [iv], 104 pp. Half-title and woodcut lyre vignette on title page of the Gay, woodcut pipes vignette on title page of the Moore; text unmarked but toned. Full contemporary blind-ruled calf, spine ruled in gilt, red leather spine label titled in gilt; binding square and tight, the leather is very weak, especially along the hinges, leather chipping from spine, spine ends chipped, corners showing. Good. Gay's Fables first appeared in 1727. Gay was an important English poet and dramatist whose works include The Beggar's Opera. Edward Moore was a lesser-known English poet whose Fables of the Female Sex, ranked him alongside Mr. Gay with the quality of his poetic works. The second volume printed for Theophilus Barrois by Francois-Ambroise Didot (1730-1804). Francois-Ambroise Didot invented a new printing-press, improved type-founding, was the first to print on vellum paper, and around 1780 adapted the point system for sizing typefaces by width.
