Thomas Gray was an English poet, classical scholar, and professor at Pembroke College, Cambridge. Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard is his most famous work. The poem was a literary sensation when it was published by Robert Dodsley in February 1751. Its reflective, calm and stoic tone was greatly admired; it is still one of the most popular and frequently quoted poems in the English Language. W. R. Cameron was a well-known commercial artist of San Francisco and was a frequent contributor on art subjects to various trade publications, including The Inland Printer.
