Bender Collection at Mills College began with a gift of 6 volumes in 1920; by 1939, the collection had increased to 5,000 volumes. This collection became the focus of The Bibliophile Society of Mills College, organized in 1932, to pursue interests in book arts and book collecting. In 1939, the group's efforts lead to this publication, which contains a Foreword by Oscar Lewis and Sidney L. Gulick, Jr.'s essay, "Whitman's Revisions." The poem was printed in Leaves of Grass as "After the Sea-Ship." The Bender gift is the original manuscript of this poem and is reproduced here as the frontispiece.
