This text reflects Stoddard's life-long interest in the city of San Francisco and its Anglo history, with its "natural tendency to overdress, to overdecorate, to overdo almost everything." Charles Warren Stoddard was an American author and editor best known for his travel books about Polynesian life. When Stoddard was 11 years old, his family moved to San Francisco. He was an early contributor to the literature of California. His first published work was issued in the September 1862 issue of The Gold Era under the pseudonym Pip Pepperpod. He submitted his contribution anonymously because "No member of my family suspected that I was so bold as to dream of entering the circle of the elect who wrote regularly every week for the chef literary organ west of the Rocky Mountains."
