4to Portfolio. 12 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches. Loosely laid in are a bifold of [4] pp. and 2 collotype facsimiles 1 of which is folding. No markings on the inserts, but the paper is lightly toned. The folding portfolio has a green cloth spine, plain paper over boards with a printed paper front cover label, silk ties; corners bumped, covers toned. Very Good. OFFERED WITH: ALCORN. The First Known Specimen of Baskerville Type. [Meriden, CT]: Issued by Paul Alcorn for The Columbiad Club of Connecticut, 1941. A single bifold printed on the front cover only, with a single sheet showing a collotype reproduction of a Specimen by John Baskerville of Birmingham, in the County of Warwick, Letter-Founder and Printer. 12 1/8 x 9 inches. [4] and [2] pp. respectively. The bifold states that the date of issue for the broadside reproduced here was 1756, but there is a pencil correction in the margin noting the issue date as 1754 citing Gaskell, 1973, p. 3 and p. XXV. Very Good. LIMITED EDITIONS of 100 and 30 copies, respectively. These are Keepsakes Numbers 31 (number 44 of 100) and 45 of the Columbiad Club of Meriden, Connecticut. These are the first full-size reproductions of the few type specimens broadsheets issued by John Baskerville which are now quite rare. Upon issuing the original portfolio, Alcorn was sent a copy of Baskerville's first specimen sheet to use in the production of the second keepsake offered here.
