In: Ars Typographica, Volume I, Number 3, Winter 1920. 4to. 12 5/8 x 8 3/16 inches. 30 pp. Of a total of (50) pages for this issue of Ars Typographica. Numerous figures including a frontispiece portrait of Johann Gutenberg, and a variety of printing specimens, head pieces, decorative initials, illustrations for other articles, 3 pages of advertising, printer's device on the colophon; text clean, unmarked. Wrappers printed in black within a ruled border with a Giunta device in red on front cover, added mylar dust-jacket; binding square and tight, some modest chips to the extremities, else Fine. This is a beautifully preserved copy of Ars Typographica, handsomely printed at the Marchbanks Press from handset types. As an acknowledged authority on type foundries, Reed was an excellent candidate to deliver this talk on changing trends in type face fashions to the Royal Society of Arts. In addition to the article by Talbot Baines Reed, this issue includes Frederic W. Goudy, "Hand-Press Printing: A Plea for a Lost Craft" (with 3 printing samples); "The Editor's Workshop;" and "Some Compliments" with reader's testimonials. Frederic Goudy began Ars Typographica in 1920 with printing at the Marchbanks Press. The Marchbanks Press was begun in 1914 by Hal Marchbanks (1877-1934), who was a founder of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. After his death, Emily E. Connor carried on the press for many years.
