Red-stamped oatmeal cloth, dust-jacket with lithographic design by Mark Hearld and printed at the Curwen Press; binding square and tight. Fine. Latin inscriptions, primarily on stone, were the special interest of John Sparrow, classical scholar, bibliophile, and Warden of All Souls. These he collected in a series of Lapidaria, printed in small editions over many years. They are collected here for the first time between two covers. This volume also reproduces the 8 colophons in red in the end-papers, collecting all the text from the original 8 fascicles with new features that explain the criteria governing Sparrow's selection and also the interplay of form an verbal suggestion in the inscriptions.
