Black cloth spine, brown paper over boards, printed paper spine and top cover labels, LACKS dust-jacket; binding square and tight, cloth freckled, small spot on front board, bookseller's catalog entry taped to front free end-paper. Laid in are two pieces of interesting Grabhorn press ephemera: 1) mailing label for this item printed on laid paper with 1 deckle edge, and 2) an announcement for "One More Book" in the first series of Rare Americana, and the commencement of the beginning of the second series which ALSO INCLUDES the first announcement of the Grabhorn's private type face, Frederic Goudy's Franciscan in honor of San Francisco and its history (toned). Good. First edition (London, 1853) issued without plates; the plates used are from De Smet's Missions de l'Oregon et Voyages aux Montagnes Rocheuses (Gand, 1848). This volume, attributed to Peter S. Ogden, provides an illuminating, and sometimes startling, account of day-to-day life among the original inhabitants of the Oregon Territory. Ogden was an explorer, author, and Hudson's Bay Company employee who was very literate, and knowledgeable in a number of regional Indian languages.
