FIRST EDITION. This is the Iowa Third Congressional District edition; Andreas made 9 separate editions of this atlas, one for each of the 9 Congressional Districts, and each having special views of the individual district (see: Stanford University SearchWorks catalog). Folio. 18 x 14 3/4 inches. Pagination irregular. vii, [1], 7-590 [ie. 550] pp. Half-title, frontispiece bird's-eye view of Davenport Iowa, elaborately illustrated title page with the Iowa State Capital, index, Preface, portraits, 139 maps 5 double-page and many color, 71 plates including a variety of city views and images of important structures in sundry towns and villages, representing each Iowa county, biographical sketches, History of the State of Iowa, statistical tables [including census data]; text with occasional foxing otherwise unmarked, title page creased. Half black publisher's morocco, blind- and gilt-decorated cloth sides, spine decorated in gilt; binding square and tight, rubbed, corners bumped and showing. Good. This Atlas is the greatest work of A. T. Andreas, who lived in Davenport Iowa where he engaged in compiling and publishing county and State atlases in partnership with John Milton Lyter. This was Andreas' most successful Atlas, financially, and its accuracy made it an official authority for real estate developers and dealers, and county and State officials. Andreas was born in Amity, New York, and migrated to Dubuque, Iowa where he taught school and conducted business. Andreas enlisted in Company G, 12th Illinois Infantry, and served in the Civil War, eventually acting as division commissary with Sherman on the March to the Sea and during the Carolina campaigns. Andreas died at New Rochelle, New York. See: Wikipedia article on Andreas. REFERENCE: David Ramsey Map Collection online resource.
