FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches. (222), [index 32] pp. Frontispiece, 35 figures, map, appendix, musical notation and lyrics to original music by Hussey, list of materials belonging to Hussey deposited in the Historical Department of Iowa, index; text clean, unmarked, some marginal water-staining. Blind- and gilt-stamped maroon cloth; binding square, mildly shaken, light shelf wear, small hole in front hinge about 1 1/4 inches down from head of spine, water stains on pastedown and first pages. Very good. Published posthumously, this slender volume tells the history of early Des Moines beginning in the early 1840s through the introduction of many "firsts" including the first military occupation, the first steamboat, the building of log cabins, the first residents, the founding of the brick industry and so forth. Tactius Hussey, a native of Indiana, was a printer, philosopher, pioneer, nature lover and poet. Hussey arrived in Des Moines on November 9, 1855. He worked at the printing office of the Statesman and other printing offices, until 1901. Hussey also wrote a number of songs, several of which are included in this volume.
