FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8 x 5 5/8 inches. 265 pp. Frontispiece portrait of author with author's facsimile inscription and tissue guard, Preface by the author, 10 plates; text clean, unmarked, paper toned and brittle. Blind- and gilt-stamped dark green cloth; binding slightly shaken with the front hinge cracked and the front endpaper through the Frontispiece loose, corners bumped and showing, spine ends frayed. Comes with early twentieth-century news clipping titled "Iowa's First School." Good. George Carroll's account of the early years in Cedar Rapids, Iowa begins with his retelling of his family's immigration from Canada to Iowa in 1839. George Carroll went on to be a prominent Presbyterian clergyman in Linn County, and used his extensive connections in the community to build up this account of the early development of Cedar Rapids and Linn County from the point of view of pioneer families.
