LIMITED EDITION of 180 copies, handset in "Monotype" [sic] Lutetia and printed on Kozu-shi handmade paper with Ogura covers. Small 4to. 6 x 4 1/2 inches. [10] pp. Half-title printed in blue, blue [anachronistic] spinning wheel vignette on title page, colophon printed in blue; text clean, unmarked. Unprinted wrappers of Japanese Ogura paper, printed on soft Kozu-shi handmade paper that complements the text; binding square and tight, very light shelf wear. Very Good. The text of this volume is a poem by Judith Masefield showing the reverence of "Mary the Maiden" as she prepares a garment worthy of the prophesied Savior. The handmade papers upon which the text is printed perfectly complements the text describing the soft woolen threads to be used for the Messiah's robe. Judith Masefield was an English book illustrator and author; her illustrations grace many of her father - John Masefield's - books, as well as books Judith Masefield wrote herself. In 1973, Judith Masefield wrote a sequel to this book, entitled Mary's Weaving. Both were printed by the Stanbrook Abbey Press, which was founded near Worcester in 1876 and run by a religious community, standing at the cross-roads of book design and religious faith. From 1955 to 1991, the Press was directed by Dame Hildelith Cumming, and "developed a distinctive Stanbrook style: the use of characterful typefaces, expertly printed on fine hand-made papers; the deployment of white space to allow texts to 'breathe'; and a liveliness achieved through colored inks, calligraphic decorations, and fine bindings."
