REPRINT from "Print: A Quarterly Journal of the Graphic Arts," Vol. IV, No 2. Pamphlet. 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches. (16) pp. Front cover with a printing press vignette in red, decorative initial and running head ornaments in red; text clean, unmarked. Self-wraps, stapled; binding square and tight, light toning along spine, vertical crease (for mailing?) from head to foot. SCARCE in the market. Very Good. At this remove, it is a bit difficult to pin down exactly who A. Raymond Hopper was. It is known that Hopper published a work entitled "Hopper's Type Tables: Fundamental Arrangements of the 'Sets' of More than 600 Type-faces, Embracing nearly 5,000 Different Fonts, in all Sizes up to 36-Point." His essay, reprinted here, seems to be a rant against the quality of the work of compositors in the United States, under the pressure of demands by management to complete production work in a timely manner. I wonder what Hopper would have thought of changes in printing practice as they have evolved since the 1960s with greater and greater usage of computer-aided page design? Probably an idle question on my part. Ritchie's lovely pamphlet with the pretty line drawing of a hand press on the front cover, seems to be an answer to Hopper's complaints: Ritchie repeated Hopper's text, but showed that Ritchie, at least, was capable of performing all the design functions Hopper claimed had been lost. What exactly Ritchie did with this little pamphlet is still something of a mystery. Ritchie did not see a need to include this item in his bibliography, The Ward Ritchie Press and Anderson, Ritchie & Simon, 1961. Worldcat lists 10 copies in libraries, 4 of which are in California: UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, UC Berkeley, and the Book Club of California.
