Dixon Wecter was born in Houston, Texas, and received a B.Litt. at Merton College Oxford where he was Rhodes Scholar 1928 to 1930, and a PhD from Yale (1936). Wechter was a professor of English at UCLA beginning in 1939, and Professor of United States History at UC Berkeley in 1949.
