The Koran [In Arabic].
1 The Koran [In Arabic].
Glasgow: David Bryce, 1900 Used: Very Good
Miniature Book. 1 1/2 x 1 inches. Paginated in Arabic - perhaps 800 or so pages? Title page and several other pages printed within decorative typographic borders, occasional marginal fleurons or decorative elements; text clean, unmarked. Bound in blind- and gilt-stamped brown leather, leather clasp wraps around fore-edge and inserts in a slit on the opposite side of the text block to hold the volume closed while not in use, a small brass ring attached to one outer side of the binding, all edges gilt; binding square and tight, leather and gilt a bit dull. Very Good. David Bryce was one of the world's most prolific and successful makers of miniature books. Bryce entered the book trade at the age of 17, and succeeded his father in the family publishing house in 1870. Soon afterwards he began the production of miniature books, employing recent developments of photolithography whereby he was able to reduce larger volumes to smaller sizes through the use of electroplates. Bryce's Korans were originally issued with a metal locket which held an inset magnifier, but the locket is not present here; a small magnifier is held to this copy with a silk thread. During World War I, the English issued Bryce's miniature Korans to Muslim soldiers fighting for the Allies. Louis Bondy describes Bryce's Koran as "almost legendary." Bondy speculates that "the great economic, political and spiritual revival which has taken place in the Arab world may perhaps account for the present scarcity" of Bryce's miniature Koran.
