LIMITED EDITION of 325 copies printed by Noel Young with typography and devices by Alan Brilliant, this is Number 299, published by The Unicorn Press to commemorate the opening of The Unicorn Book Shop, January 2, 1967. Portfolio. 21 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches. Title-page, List of Contributors, 9 broadsides and 1 bi-fold laid in; text clean, unmarked. The broadsides are each published on a different paper, which are loosely laid into a large goldenrod-paper bi-fold, that in turn is inserted into a larger sheet of green paper whose bottom edge is folded over and taped at the bottom edge to form a pocket; the broadsheets and the goldenrod bi-fold are in fine condition, the edges of the green paper folder are shelf worn with a few small tears. Very Good. Unicorn Broadsheet Series I & II [Portfolio cover title]. [Santa Barbara]: Unicorn Press, 1968-1971. Portfolio. 22 x 14 3/4 inches. 20 broadsides laid into a portfolio with beige cloth spine and corners, red paper over boards, printed paper front cover label, limitation statement printed on a paper label mounted inside the rear board; square and tight, bump to the middle of the fore edge of the rear board. Broadsides are in fine condition, unless otherwise noted, portfolio in Very Good condition. This collection includes Broadside series I and II. Please contact me for a full bibliographical description, which includes information on additional material included but not printed by the Unicorn Press. The Unicorn Press was founded by Alan "Al" Brilliant, and Theo Savory (1907-1989) in Santa Barbara in 1966. In 1972, the press moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, where it has remained ever since. Most of the 33 broadsides included here were printed during the early years of the Unicorn Press when it's home was in Santa Barbara, California; a few items included were printed by others.

LIMITED EDITION of 250 copies, this is number 5. Miniature Book. 2 3/8 x 1 3/4 inches. 126 pp. Text in Russian, 16 illustrations; text clean, unmarked. Full blind- and gilt-stamped white morocco, multi-colored illustration of a woman's profile in art nouveau style on the front cover, all edges marbled, illustrated end-papers; binding square and tight. From Mel Kavin's private collection with his name inked into the preliminaries, a signature I cannot decipher, and dated "30-08-95." Fine. Mel Kavin had world-wide connections amongst miniature book aficionados, designers, and printers. This is a text of Russian-language verses by Edward Yanovsky, printed by the Russian printing house, Yaniko, that specializes in miniature books. During the Soviet era, there was a strong tradition of miniature books circulating in the underground, and there were a lot of publishers with great skill in the genre. Yaniko emerged from the Soviet era in the 1990s as a major publisher of miniature books. This volume has a particularly appealing illustrated leather binding.

Frontispiece illustrated portrait of Markham, all pages in pictorial borders and within blue rules, decorative initials and textual ornament in orange, LACKS original photograph of Millet's painting and letter from Markham giving the Club permission to print his poem; text clean, unmarked. Quarter gray linen, paper spine label, blue paper; binding square and tight, shelf wear, covers lightly soiled. Includes a letter from Edwin Markham to Albert M. Bender, August 14, 1915: "After all these years I am having the hardihood to change a word in my poem, 'The Man with the Hoe.' In the last line of the second stanza, I am changing menage to danger. This will clarify and energize the line. Please make this correction in the reprint of the Hoe-poem now under way." Very Good. Printed by John Henry Nash for the Book Club of California, frontispiece and border decorations by Ray F. Coyle. American Oldstyle Italic and Caslon Roman types, printed on San Marco paper. Edwin Markham was an American poet and the Poet Laureate of Oregon. This is his most famous poem, which was a commentary on the plight of American laborers. Markham provides an Introduction before the text of the poem. "This is one of the very early publications of the Book Cub of California. It is now a rare item." O'Day, pg. 4. He was known for his dialect works which captured the dialect of Indiana country folk, and his children's poetry. The Passing of the Backhouse was one of his favorite poems. "This book was printed letterpress on 60 lb. Warren's Eggshell paper, using handset Bembo types. It was made at Bookhaven Press by Pall Bohne, who also drew the illustrations." Colophon. In 1967, Paul Winer was a poet in residence at a small college in Battleboro, Vermont. He and his first wife, Lassie, were "booby Trapped into the private press fraternity by publishing their own manuscripts." Weygand. The Winers published more than their own poetry, as is evidenced in their 1967 series The Plough and Field, included in this archive. Also included are 2 Vermont Stoveside Press books (Donald Wilcox's The First Time Out, Poems, and Winer's Along Five Miles of Country Roads, Poems). Included as well are 2 TLS from Winer to Pall Bohne, including shop talk about printing equipment, an extensive discussion of the Plough and Field Series and Winer's motivation for printing them, and a critique of Bohne's Haiku with Birds miniature book. Winer's first marriage to Lassie lasted 5 years. Then Winer embarked on a career as a comedian and nude blues performer under the stage name Sweet Pie. He took his nude review to television on a cable channel: "I was in court 68 times and won every case. I was at the center of some landmark freedom of expression cases. I won the case that Lenny Bruce Lost." Today, Winer is the proprietor of Reader's Oasis Books in Quartzite, Arizona, over which he presides in the nude, and where he is sometimes known as "The Bareassed Bookseller." REFERENCE: James L.
