Annual and Guide to California, issued by A. Phillips & Co., Manager of Boston and California Excursions., A. Phillips & Co.
2 A. Phillips & Co. Annual and Guide to California, issued by A. Phillips & Co., Manager of Boston and California Excursions.
San Francisco: H. S. Crocker & Co, 1887 Paperback Used: Very Good Paperback
No statement of the precedent of this annual travel guide. 8vo. 9 x 5 7/8 inches. 112 pp. Woodcut illustrations throughout of hotels and sites (the railroad sleeping car is especially evocative), woodcut tail pieces, contemporary advertisements for hotels and services throughout, tables of data on population, temperatures, and products, maps, including a 4-page insert promoting Orange county with a two color map printed on different quality paper from the main text; text clean, unmarked, light toning. Yellow printed wrappers with the Hotel Alhambra on the front and a map of Beaumont in Riverside County on the rear cover, protected by a plastic jacket; binding square and tight, light soiling, rear corners chipped, "1887" penciled on the top margin of the front cover. SCARCE. Very Good. The Preface reads: "This Annual is published by Messrs. A. Phillips & Co. (long known as the managers of Boston and California Excursions), in the interest of their work, and to aid people in obtaining reliable information about California; also, to assist first-class people to obtain a cheap and comfortable trip to California. In placing our Annual List of Excursions before the public, we would say, as we are the oldest Company organizing this kind of Excursions, our motto is still 'Excelsior.'" 2 copies Sold at the Dawson auction in 2007; $ 2,500.00; $ 3,400.00; but likely not this particular annual issue. Its seems that each year Phillips contracted with a different publisher; this is the H. S. Crocker imprint; California State Library confirmed this as the 1887 issue. Worldcat records 2 copies of the H. S. Crocker issue of the Annual, Huntington Library and the Wisconsin Historical Society.

New York Covici-Friede 1929 Paperback Collectible: Very Good Missing Paperback Rockwell Kent
LIMITED EDITION of 750 copies, this is number 714, handset in Deepdene type designed by Frederic W. Goudy and printed on Arnold unbleached cream wove paper (hand-made). Typography by S. A. Jacobs at the Composing Room of the Stratford Press and bound at the American Book Bindery, New York. 8vo. 9 x 5 3/4 inches. x, 33, [1] pp. Half-title, dove vignette on title page, 4 Rockwell Kent wood cuts in the text; text clean, unmarked. Bound in limp Pergamus sheepskin parchment, gilt dove vignette on front cover, titled in gilt on the spine, edges of pages untrimmed; binding square and tight, corners curled a bit, minor soiling or toning to covers, no glassine jacket or slip case. Very Good. Gavriliada (The Gabriliad) was written in 1821 and circulated in manuscript in Russian; it was first published in the early twentieth century. It is a sexually explicit, blasphemous work. The poem is a satiric description of the virgin birth and God's ineptness. Although the story is highly blasphemous and satirical, it is not blatantly pornographic and is written in a fine, high-spirited tone. Alexander Pushkin was a Russian author of the Romantic era who is considered by many to be the greatest Russian poet and the founder of modern Russian Literature. Pushkin was a member of the Russian nobility; he published his first poem at the age of fifteen, and was widely recognized as a major figure by the literary establishment by the time of this graduation from the Imperial Lyceum.
