Frontispiece of Frank Morrison Pixley, color illustration on title page, black-and-white headpieces and tailpieces, 4 double-sided black-and-white plates, bibliography, Feathered Serpent Press printer's device in red ink on colophon; text clean, unmarked. Full gray cloth, gilt-titled spine, end-papers printed with pages from The Argonaut, white paper dust jacket; binding square and tight, dust jacket lightly rubbed, chipped at tail of spine. A Fine Copy in a Very Good jacket. The illustrations used as chapter headings are taken directly from illustrations and department headings of The Argonaut during its first eighteen years. The title page cartoon figure of Pixley was taken from a larger political cartoon (entitled 'Ready for the Gray' in The Wasp, July 26, 1884) about the 1884 presidential campaign between Cleveland and Blaine. A biography of Frank Morrison Pixley (1825-1895), as part of the Book Club of California's series on significant West Coast bookmen. Pixley was a Californian journalist and politician. "As the founder and chief editor of The Argonaut, Pixley exercised considerable influence on San Francisco's literary scene.
