[342] pp. 168 lots fully described and elaborately illustrated with images of bindings and title-pages, including 4 color illustrations of medieval manuscripts with tissue guards; text clean, un-marked. Original printed wrappers; binding tight, covers soiled, extremities chipped with loss. Bookplate inside front cover reads: "From the Library of Estelle Doheny at 8 Chester Place, Los Angeles" is probably added at later auction of Doheny's collections. With a 3-page Foreword by Seymour de Ricci in which he remarks "The small collection of thirty-five manuacripts and one hundred thrity-three books described in this catalogue is the most valuable and interesting to be sold by auction in this country since the Robert Hoe sales of 1911 and 1912. The outstanding artistic and historical importance of nearly every item here listed, the remarkable circumstance that not one of them has changed hands for the past century or more, the additional interesting fact that they come directly from two old family libraries formed two hundred years ago and belonging to one of the most illustrious families of great Britain, made the task of the cataloguers not only pleasant bu even thrilling.... A novel feature of this catalogue is the number of facsimile reproductions; in all but a few instances, the illustrations are the exact size of the originals and are placed opposite the actual descriptions.
