Walter Curran Mendenhall was the fifth director of the United States Geological Survey. In 1897, Mendenhall was one of the pioneer geologists in Alaska, and in 1903 became one of the first ground-water specialists in the Water Resources Branch. In 1930, President Herbert Hoover appointed Mendenhall Director of the US Geological Survey.
