Aesop was a Greek fabulist and story teller credited with a number of fables now collectively known as Aesop's Fables. The numerous tales credited to him were gathered across the centuries and in many languages in a storytelling tradition that continues to this day. Many of the tales are characterized by animals and inanimate objects that speak, solve problems, and generally have human characteristics. Levien, set in Caslon type, illustrations printed offset, the Charles Press printed 500 sheets of Bergstrom's Hilding paper, which were bound in London by T. C. Woolnough & Son, Ltd. Miniature Book. 2 1/2 x 2 1/4 inches. Unpaginated. [48] pp. Illustrated throughout with Dr. Anderson's wood-cut illustrations, including a frontispiece self-portrait at age 81, bibliography; text clean, unmarked. Quarter black cloth, marbled paper over boards, printed paper front cover label, illustrated end-papers; binding square and tight, light shelf wear. Very Good. This volume contains the life story of Alexander Anderson, a medical doctor whose main interest in life was wood engraving. "Jack R. Levien published miniature books in New York under the Trader's Press imprint from 1967 to 1969, and then under his name from 1970 to 1972 after moving to Holland. Levien focused on book design when publishing his first five titles while in New York. He contracted separately with others to do the printing and binding." Bradbury, p. 127. [vi], 106, [2] pp. Black-and-white frontispiece of the title page for an American edition of Janeway's A Token for Children, and 15 other black-and-white illustrations from vintage children's books, front free end-paper and colophon embellished with hand-drawn flower illustrations; text clean, unmarked. Gilt-stamped red cloth; bindings slightly askew, front paste-down beginning to come up. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the colophon. Very good. This book is an extended mediation on the pleasure that can be gained from the ownership and study of children's books published in ages past. Alla T. Ford was born in the Ukraine, the daughter of a Czarist general. She was educated at the Sorbonne, and, later, in 1957, was one of the original 16 members of The International Wizard of Oz Club. She helped establish science-fiction and children's book collections at the Universities of George and South Florida.

Braun & Co., in Alhambra, California, and faithfully recreates the tones of the pages of the original 1800 edition used in the reproduction. Carey Stillman Bliss (1914-1994), a rare books expert and the curator of rare books at the Huntington Library, contributed an introductory note explaining the history and context of the Carey's edition.

Printed from Eric Gill's Perpetua type on handmade 'Hayle' paper of the Hayle Mill, Maidstone, England, by Joh. Enschede en Zonen, Haarlem, Holland, and bound by Proost en Brandt N.V., Amsterdam, Holland. PROVENANCE: Charlotte Tamblyn Tufts (1912-2010) was born in New York City and educated at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. She and her husband, Nathan A. Tufts, Jr. moved to Burbank, CA in the 1930s. Charlotte received a masters degree in library science in 1963 and developed the Western History Room of the Burbank Public Library and was also librarian at the research library of the Southwest Museum in Highland Park, CA. Subsequently Charlotte Tufts worked for rare-manuscript dealer Doris Harris as assistant, and eventually partner. Tufts retired from employment with Doris Harris at the age of 80.
